Cataract

Cataract

A clouding or loss of transparency of the lens in the eye as a result of tissue breakdown and protein clumping. There are many causes of cataracts, including aging, diabetes, and other diseases. Cataracts affect most people who live into old age.

Symptoms include double or blurred vision and sensitivity to light and glare. A physician can diagnose cataracts by examining the eyes with a viewing instrument. Sunglasses can help to prevent cataracts.

Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in people above 50 years, according to the National Blindness and Visual Impairment Survey India 2015-19. The condition is behind 66.2 per cent blindness cases, 80.7 per cent severe visual impairment cases and 70.2 per cent moderate visual impairment cases in the age group.
